Natural Healing Remedies for Allergies

What are Allergies?

Allergies are disorders of the immune system that can result in reactions to things that are typically harmless to most people.  Substances that can cause allergic reactions are called allergens.  The allergens can be certain types of foods, cosmetics, animal hair, poisonous plants, dust, plant pollen, change in temperature or medicines.

Common symptoms are skin reactions, asthma, swollen throat, sinus headaches, stuffy or runny nose, diarrhea, flatulence, vomiting or watery eyes

Types of Allergies

Generally allergies can be separated into 4 main types:

  1. Food allergy

These are allergies to food additives (dyes, thickeners, preservatives, monosodium glutamate or MSG), peanuts, tree nuts (pecans, almonds, walnuts), fruits (strawberries, oranges, melons, pineapple and other tropical fruits), tomatoes, eggs, wheat, milk, chocolates, fish, shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster) and other sea foods.

Symptoms are swelling of the throat, difficulty in swallowing, nausea and vomiting, stomach cramps, indigestion, diarrhea, wheezing or nasal congestion, difficulty in breathing, hives, itching or eczema, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body, blue color to the skin and nails, light headedness, dizziness or fainting.

  2. Insect sting allergy

These are allergies from bee or hornet stings, mosquito bites, cockroach and flea bites. Symptoms are pain, swelling, itching and redness.  More serious allergy symptoms are difficulty in breathing or swallowing, disorientation, swelling of eyes and mouth.

  3. Respiratory allergy

These are allergies to tree or grass pollens, animals, moulds, dust or dust mites usually affecting the respiratory system.  Symptoms are sneezing, coughing, runny nose, shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing.  Hay fever (rhintis) and/or asthma are the most common symptoms of allergy

  4. Skin allergy

These are allergies to poisonous plants such as poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac, cosmetics such as creams, detergents. jewellery and change in temperature.  Symptoms are swelling, itching, prickly heat, hives (urticaria) and redness of skin

Ways to alleviate allergies symptoms

  1. The most basic and effective allergy treatment is avoidance.  Seek the doctor's help in identifying the allergens and then just simply avoid those allergens.

  2. For allergies to mold and dust mites, regularly clean the house.  Keep the house cool and airy.

  3. If affordability permits, air-condition your house as it can keep humidity low which discourages dust mites and molds.

  4. Install an air cleaner which are good at removing pollens that are already in the air.

  5. Seal beddings in plastic for dust mite allergy

  6. No carpets in the house as these are favourite attractions for dust mites.

  7. Wear a face mask when doing house cleaning or lawn mowing.
