Essential Oils for Depression


A lot of people may encounter depression during certain times of their lives and will rather seek natural healing solutions especially for only mild cases. Aromatherapy may not be able to cure depression however it has been found to be really useful in conjunction with other types of therapies in helping to produce a much more positive feelings.  Touch is very effective in supporting emotional healing, whether it is in the form of self-massage or a massage from a professional Aromatherapist.  This healing touch can greatly help in enhancing recovery.


For depression cases, the use of aromatic essential oils can be a chemical-free yet effective natural healing solution in reducing stress, elevating mood and bringing about a sense of calmness. 


Essential oils and depression symptoms

  • Jasmine - useful for severe depression cases as it helps in soothing nerves, restoring as well as revitalizing energy and generating feelings of euphoria, confidence and optimism.

  • Angelica - used for treatment of insomnia

  • Rosemary - traditionally used in treating depression and insomnia due to its soothing therapeutic properties.

  • Cardamom - effective in decreasing anxiety and stress, combating fatigue and lifting depression.

  • Basil - combats fatigue, anxiety and depression.

  • Rose - contains properties that can work throughout the nervous system.

  • Melissa - contains relaxant, antidepressant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. 

  • Clary Sage - helpful for cases of insomnia, anxiety and depression.

  • Yiang-yiang - effective for anxiety, insomnia and depression as it acts as a relaxer.  This essential oil is useful in quelling fear, anger and stress.

  • Geranium - Its aroma is effective in releasing negative emotions and lifting the spirits.  It contains sedative, anti-inflammatory, anti-depressant and antioxidant properties.

  • Sandalwood - effective in easing tension due to its sedative properties.

Blend 1


Use stimulant and tonic essential oils, such as jasmine and angelica, in foot massages and baths at least 3 times a week to alleviate depression.


Blend 2


For an antidepressant stimulating massage, combine 7 drops of Rosemary essential oil to 1 oz of carrier oil.  Use that to massage along the spine.


Blend 3


For an antidepressant foot massage, combine 5 drops of Angelica, 6 drops of Cardamom and 2 drops of Basil essential oils to 1 oz of carrier oil.


Blend 4


For an antidepressant bath, add 2 drops of Jasmine, 2 drops of Rose and 1 drop of Melissa essential oils to your bath water.


Blend 5


For an antidepressant Diffuser or Aroma Lamp treatment, use 5 drops of Basil essential oil.  Basil is effective in alleviating depression, anxiety and fatigue.


Blend 6


For an antidepressant inhaler, combine 4 parts of Clary Sage, 4 parts of Yiang Yiang, 2 parts of Basil, 3 parts of Geranium and 1 part of Sandalwood essential oils in a small glass bottle.  As and when needed, just simply open the bottle and sniff throughout the day.  Alternatively instead of sniffing, just add the essential oils to a tissue then smell it through the day.
