Natural remedies for cough

You will be surprise to learn that a cough can actually be beneficial although it can be a really unpleasant symptom.  Coughing can help in decongesting block breathing passages and expelling toxins in phlegm.  Hence it may not always be a good idea to try suppressing a cough with medication.

There are a few kinds of coughs with each cough being an indicator of a specific type of health issue such as:

  • Whooping cough

Whooping cough is often characterized by a wheezing sound in the chest and frequent hoarse coughing.

  • Laryngitis

Laryngitis can cause hoarse coughing when the mucous backs up in the throat and start irritating the larynx.

  • Cough in children

Infants may cough when they are teething.  Toddlers and older children may cough due to the presence of intestinal parasites.

  • Cough in adults

When adults cough, it may usually be a symptom of nervous or cardiac disorder.

Flower remedies for cough

An expectorant can really help in expelling mucous from the lungs without suffering from the side effects of drugs.  There are a few flower remedies that are beneficial in alleviating the cough symptoms although the best flower remedy for coughs is still using the coltsfoot flowers.

Although the dried leaves of coltsfoot are more commonly used than the flowers themselves, the coltsfoot flowers actually contain very similar properties to the coltsfoot leaves.  Pick the coltsfoot flowers for immediate use in early spring.

  1. Coltsfoot infusion - Make a coltsfoot flower infusion by using 2 tablespoons of fresh coltsfoot flowers to 4 cups boiled water.  Cover and let it steep for 30 minutes before straining the infusion out.  Use some honey to sweeten and drink warm as required.

Ground ivy

Ground ivy can help in expelling mucous during coughing and soothing irritated membranes in the breathing passages.  However this herbal remedy is not recommended for dry cough though.

  1. Ground ivy infusion - Infuse 1 oz of ground ivy flower tops in a quart of boiled water.

  2. Drink 2 - 3 cups daily.

Lavender has an antiseptic effect on breathing passages and can help in controlling coughing that brings up a lot of mucous.

  1. Lavender infusion - Infuse 1 oz of lavender flowers in a quart of boiled water and drink 3 -4 cups daily.

  2. Lavender cough syrup - Make your very own lavender honey cough syrup by mixing 2 tablespoons of lavender flowers with one cup of honey, set aside to stand for about 2 days, strain the syrup into a glass container and take 1 - 2 teaspoon when you encounter severe coughing.

Sword flower

Sword flower is also known as foreign devil lotus, despot flower or Celestial ruler flower and is beneficial for easing coughing, moistening the lungs and acting as a tonic for the stomach and spleen.  This flower remedy is good for a dry hot cough.

  1. Place 30 grams sword flowers, 6 grams dried orange peel and some brown or white sugar, simmer them in water then serve.
