Herbal remedies for cough
Coughing is a symptom that somehow seems particularly responsive to
plant therapy. Here a few natural herbal remedies which you can
try at home.
The angelica herb can help in alleviating
a smoker's cough.
Place 1 1/2 oz of the angelica plant into
a quart of water and boil for 10 minutes.
Drink one cup before breakfast and
another cup in the evening before bedtime.
Borage is helpful in soothing irritated
respiratory passages and alleviating coughing. It is especially
recommended for cases of dry coughing and bronchitis.
Borage infusion - Infuse 1 oz of
borage herbs in a quart of water then filter the herbal remedy through
a fine cloth for removal of filaments which can irritate the throat.
Drink 3 - 4 cups daily
Coltsfoot is a really excellent herbal
remedy for persistent harsh coughing that is accompanied by
expectoration of phlegm, bronchitis and spasms.
Coltsfoot infusion - Prepare an
infusion by using 1 oz of coltsfoot per quart of boiled water.
Sweeten the coltsfoot infusion with either a little aniseed or natural
honey then drink a few cups during the course of the day.
Coltsfoot syrup - Combine together
1 oz each of coltsfoot, plantain and hyssop with 2/3 oz of malva and a
pinch of red poppy flowers then pour one quart of boiling water over
the mixture, cover and let it steep overnight. Next morning,
filter out the brew, add 1 kg of sugar then place in a double boiler to
heat until the liquid has the consistency of a syrup. Take note
that this herbal remedy cannot be stored for too long though.
Eucalyptus is great in stimulating phlegm
production, calming coughing fits and having an antiseptic effect on
Eucalyptus infusion - Infuse 1 oz
of eucalyptus herbs in a quart of water for about 20 minutes, add some
natural honey and lemon juice then drink 4 - 6 cups daily.
Eucalyptus syrup - Add 2 oz of
eucalyptus leaves in a quart of boiling water, remove from heat and set
aside to stand overnight, filter, add another 800 grams of sugar then
boil again until the liquid has a consistency of a thick syrup.
Take a couple of teaspoons of eucalyptus syrup a few times daily.
The maidenhair fern is recommended for
cases of persistent coughing.
Boil 1/2 to 1 oz of maidenhair fern in a
quart of water for about 4 minutes.
Drink 2 cups daily.
Marshmallow can help in soothing
irritated respiratory passages and alleviating coughing.
Marshmallow cough syrup - Soak
about 2 oz of marshmallow root in one quart of cold water and leave
Add 1 1/2 to 2 lbs of sugar then simmer
for 15 to 20 minutes.
Mullein can help in soothing a cough and
Mullein infusion - Use 1 oz of
mullein herbs per quart of water when preparing the infusion.
Filter the infusion through a fine cloth
to remove filaments that can really irritate the throat.
Drink 3 -4 cups daily.
Rosemary can help to quiet a cough
Rosemary infusion - Use 1/2 oz of
rosemary plant per quart of boiled water for the infusion.
Drink 1 cup after meals.
Speedwell can help in expelling mucous
and acting as a tonic in rebuilding strength after persistent coughing.
Speedwell infusion - Prepare the
infusion by using 1 oz of speedwell plant to one quart of boiled water.
Drink one cup before meals and also
before bedtime at night.
Wild thyme works very well in easing
chronic and persistent coughs.
Wild thyme infusion - Infuse 1 oz
of wild thyme in one quart of boiled water and drink 3 cups daily.
Cultivated thyme infusion -
Cultivated thyme can help to tame convulsive coughing. Infuse 1
oz of cultivated thyme in a quart of hot water (not boiling water) and
drink 3 - 4 cups a day.
