Herbal Remedies for Diabetes

Nature is truly wonderful as it does offer a variety of sugar-reducing substances that is beneficial for those suffering from diabetes.  However, it is crucial to take note that plant power alone cannot cure diabetic condition hence you should still strictly follow the doctor's guidance.  These natural healing herbal remedies though can greatly contribute to a diabetic's good health.

 

Blueberry

 

The extract from blueberry is nicknamed vegetal insulin due to its effectiveness in reducing blood sugar levels.  It is best to harvest the blueberry leaves before the blueberry plant reaches its maturity then mix with equal portions of nettle, green beans or dandelion for maximum effectiveness.

  1. To prepare a blueberry infusion, add a handful of blueberry leaves to one quart of boiling water.

  2. Drink the whole amount during the course of the day.

  3. Another method is to soak the blueberry leaves in 2 quarts of cold water overnight and then boil until 50% of water is left.

Burdock

 

Burdock can help in lowering blood sugar levels as well as combating skin problems associated with diabetes.

  1. Just simply place 2 oz of burdock roots into a quart of water then boil for about 10 minutes.

  2. Drink one cup each morning before breakfast and one or two more cups during the day.

Chicory

 

The chicory herb makes quite a mild laxative infusion which can help in regulating blood sugar levels, reducing the volume of urine, slaking thirst and having a tonic effect on the intestines and liver.

  1. Prepare a chicory infusion by placing 2 oz of chicory dried roots or 1/2 oz of dried chicory leaves into 1 quart of boiling water.

  2. Drink one cup before meals.

Note: Another option is to just add chicory leaves to salads

 

Dandelion

 

Dandelion are beneficial in treating diabetes and various skin disorders.  To ensure less bitterness, it is best to harvest the dandelion plants before they start producing flowers.  If you intend to pick wild dandelions, make sure you choose those that are well away from houses and roads to avoid picking contaminated plants.

  1. Prepare a dandelion decoction by chopping up 2 oz of dandelion roots and boiling them in a quart of water for about 10 minutes. Drink a few cups throughout the day.

  2. Or prepare a dandelion infusion by using 2 oz of dried or fresh dandelion leaves per quart of boiling water.

  3. Another way is to chew about a dozen dandelion stems a day.

  4. Or you can just add the dandelion leaves to salads twice daily.

Eucalyptus

 

Eucalyptus is a herb that can help in lowering sugar levels in the urine and blood.  It is also an antiseptic and a stimulant for the urinary tract.

  1. Prepare a eucalyptus infusion by adding 2 oz of eucalyptus leaves into a quart of boiling water.

  2. Drink 4 - 5 cups daily

Ginseng

 

Ginseng is a highly versatile herbal remedy that has proven its capability of being able to reduce blood sugar levels.  The easiest way of consuming ginseng is to take it in capsule form.  Just simply follow the directions in the package.

 

Goat's rue

 

Goat's rue is effective in lowering blood sugar levels and increasing tolerance for carbohydrates.  However it is essential to conduct regular tests to make sure that you do not ingest too much carbohydrates and risk falling into a diabetic coma.

  1. To prepare a goat's rue infusion, add 2 to 3 oz of goat's rue plant to one quart of boiling water.

  2. Drink three or four cups daily.

Green or yellow string beans

 

Green or yellow string beans helps in reducing blood sugar levels and in controlling mild cases of diabetes.  However to get the maximum effect, it is best to harvest the green or yellow string beans before they reach full maturity and to ingest the beans along with a berry or nettle infusion.

 

Gymnema sylvestre

 

The gymnema sylvestre plant is native to India and has traditionally served as a diabetes "medication" in India due to its blood sugar lowering capability.  This herb is effective for both type I and type II diabetes as it helps to control blood sugar levels.  In fact, tests has proven that it enables type I diabetics to reduce their insulin dosages and type II diabetics to decrease or discontinue their oral medications.  One of the greatest benefit seen is that this herb will lower blood glucose only if it is high and will not touch normal blood sugar levels unlike diabetic drugs which can drop normal blood sugar to dangerously low levels.

  1. The recommended herbal remedy dosage is 400 grams daily of gymnema sylvestre extract either in capsule or liquid form.  The herbal extract is available in health food store.

Mulberries and blackberries

 

Both mulberries and blackberries have been traditionally used as a herbal remedy for diabetes and has the capability of reducing or even curing high sugar concentrations in the urine.

  1. Prepare infusions by using 2 oz of leaves to 1 quart of boiling water.

  2. Drink 3 cups daily before meals.

Note:  Another alternative is to purchase a commercially prepared extract at health food or herbal stores or from some pharmacies.

 

Nettle

 

Nettle is not only effective in lowering blood sugar levels, but also in acting as a disinfectant and a depurative.  It is also effective in combating allergic rashes, eczema and diarrhea as well as helping to restore vigor in those suffering from general fatigue.

  1. Place 1 1/2 oz of nettle roots into a quart of water and bring to boil for five minutes.  If nettle leaves are used then boil for only two minutes.

  2. Remove the nettle brew from heat and set aside to stand for 10 minutes.

  3. Drink 3 or 4 cups daily.

Sage

 

Sage tea helps in lowering blood sugar in diabetics especially when consumed on an empty stomach.

  1. Brew a sage infusion by placing one or two teaspoons of dried sage leaves in a cup of boiling water.

  2. Let it steep for 10 minutes before straining and serving.

  3. Drink this herbal remedy up to 3 cups daily.

Walnut

 

Walnut helps in reducing blood sugar levels and alleviating thirst and the need to urinate.

  1. Prepare a walnut infusion using 2/3 oz of walnut leaves to one quart of boiling water.

  2. Drink the amount throughout the day.
