Herbal Remedies for Hiccups

Hiccups are caused by the involuntary contractions of the diaphragm which pushes sufficient air up through the vocal chords to produce the hiccup sound.  Causes of hiccups can range from consumption of dry, starchy foods to alcohol.


There are a few simple favorite ways in getting rid of hiccups such as:

  • holding the breath

  • drinking a glass of water while bending over

  • swallowing a tablespoon of pineapple juice

Absinthe is an antispasmodic that helps to stop the contractions of the diaphragm.  Generally absinthe also has a beneficial effect on digestion.

  1. Infuse a pinch of absinthe in one quart of boiling water for about 5 minutes then sweeten with a little honey.  Drink 2 cups daily either cold or hot for up to 3 days for treatment of persistent hiccups.

Note: Never exceed the recommended dosage as absinthe can be habit forming.




Similar to absinthe, angelica is also an antispasmodic herb that can help in facilitating digestion.

  1. Prepare an angelica infusion by using 1/2 oz of seeds to one quart of water.



Mint is yet another antispasmodic herb that has a calming effect on the nervous system, helps in prevention of intestinal fermentation and in the formation of excess gas as well as stimulating stomach functions.

  1.  Prepare a mint infusion by using 2/3 oz of mint herb to one quart of boiling water.  If you have the tendency of getting the hiccups after eating, drink one cup of mint infusion before leaving the table.
