Home Natural Remedies for Asthma

Asthma is a respiratory disorder that obstructs nasal passages and causing difficulty in breathing.  It can be triggered by allergies, by changes in temperature, contamination in the air we breathe, through occupational exposure to various irritants or as a result of genetic factor. Symptoms of asthma attack are wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness, pain or pressure.

These are some effective natural remedies that can help to control asthma.

Cocoa

For those who loves cocoa then this chocolaty-tasting home remedy will be good for you as you can enjoy drinking it as well as healing yourself from asthma.  Cocoa contains two healing properties which are caffeine and theobromine.  The caffeine properties constitutes only about 10 - 20% compared to those found in coffee hence allowing it to provide a gentle stimulation without the nerve-wracking drawbacks.  Both caffeine and theobromine are chemically related to theophylline which are used in inhalers to help open the air passageways in the lungs hence making cocoa very beneficial for asthma.

  1. Use 1 - 2 heaping teaspoons of cocoa in one cup of hot water or milk.

  2. Sweeten as desired and enjoy 2 cups a day.

Coffee

Coffee contains many times more caffeine than cocoa.  The caffeine is about 65 - 120 mg per cup of coffee compared to 10 - 20mg per cup of cocoa.  Coffee has been proven to be highly effective in opening air passages.  Drink up to 3 cups daily.  However, note that coffee may cause an increase in blood pressure, heart, cholesterol and respiration rates.  It can also cause irritability and insomnia so make sure you do not exceed the recommended amount.

Garlic

Garlic are sometimes known as natural penicillin and is very useful in treating various types of pulmonary disorders.  Prepare a garlic extract by soaking a few cloves of garlic in some 90-proof alcohol for about 10 days.  Then put 20 drops of garlic extract on a sugar cube and slowly suck on it when you start to feel an asthma attack is coming.

Kola

Kola is a tropical nut that contains sufficient caffeine in it to help prevent asthma attacks.

  1. Prepare a tea by adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of powdered kola nuts into a cup of water and bring to boil.

  2. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes.

  3. Remove from heat and consume up to 3 cups daily.

Mustard oil

Mix mustard oil with a little camphor then apply over the back of the chest when there is an asthma attack.
