Preparation of a Herbal Decoctions

A herbal decoction is most suitable for making herbal teas as this preparation is used to extract out the active ingredients from the harder parts of the plants like the roots, bark, stems, seeds, nuts or other tough woody parts.  Some plants will only release their medicinal ingredients after being simmered in boiling water, over low heat, for a long period of time.

To make a herbal decoction

  1. Pour the required amount of water into a container and bring the water to a boil.  Generally about 1 cup of water is used

  2. Add in the required amount of the plant parts and continue simmering over low heat for 15-30 mins.  Generally about 2 tablespoons of fresh herbs are used.

  3. Remove from heat and let the brew stand for a few mins

  4. Strain the liquid out while it is still hot.

Herbal decoction guide

  1. The difference between infusions and decoctions is that infusions are prepared without added heat through boiling whilst decoctions are simmered for some time over low heat

  2. If you need to store decoctions for some amount of time, follow the same storage process as defined for herbal infusion.
